Tozeur

Date-palm capital — the Sahara's edge, brick-patterned medina and Star Wars sands.

Tozeur sits on the rim of Chott el Jerid, Tunisia's massive salt lake, and is the most refined oasis town in the country — an old caravan stop turned premium desert destination.

Its medina (Ouled el Hadef) is famous for its geometric brickwork — a 14th-century pattern unique in the Arab world.

From Tozeur you cross the Chott to the Sahara properly: the dunes around Ong Jemel, Mos Espa (the Tatooine slave-quarters set still standing), and the lush mountain oases northward.

What to see in Tozeur

Ouled el Hadef medina

Famous for its 14th-century geometric brickwork — patterns unique in the Arab world. A morning walk through the alleys, with the brick facades catching the light, is one of Tunisia's quiet highlights.

Chott el Jerid

A vast salt lake that turns iridescent pink and blue at certain times of day. The causeway crossing to Kebili is a half-day excursion in itself.

Ong Jemel and Mos Espa

The 'camel's neck' rock formation and the still-standing Mos Espa film set from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Sunrise quad tours are the classic experience.

Tozeur palm grove (200,000 trees)

The largest palmery in Tunisia — irrigated by an intricate, centuries-old water-sharing system. Take a calèche tour or rent a bike.

Getting there

Tozeur-Nefta International Airport (TOE) has direct flights from Paris, Lyon and Marseille in winter, plus year-round domestic flights from Tunis. Louages from Tunis take 8 hours; the SNCFT train via Sfax is slower but scenic.

Where to stay

Anantara Sahara Tozeur (5★, the country's most striking design hotel), Hotel Palm Beach Palace (boutique 4★ in the palmery), and Ksar Rouge for character. Booking 2–3 months ahead is wise October–April.

Food & culture

Deglet Nour ('finger of light') dates are Tozeur's gold — try them fresh from October and dried year-round. Local couscous with camel meat and bnafsi (date pastry) are specialties. The traditional water-distribution committees of the palmery are a UNESCO Intangible Heritage candidate.

Practical tips

October–April only. Summer temperatures exceed 45 °C. Daytime sand activities (quad, camel) are best at sunrise or sunset. Modest dress in the medina is appreciated. Refuel before any desert excursion — petrol stations are rare south of Nefta.

Can I still visit Mos Espa?+

Yes — the set has been partially restored and is in the open desert 30 km from Tozeur. Sunrise tours are standard.

When is the best time to visit Tozeur?+

October–April. Spring (March–April) and late autumn (October–November) are ideal: warm days, cool nights, full palmeries.
