Douz — gateway to the Sahara
The southern town where Tunisia's hard tarmac ends and the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental begin. Camel and 4×4 expeditions depart from here; the central market square is genuinely atmospheric.
Douz, gateway to the great Eastern Sand Sea and Tunisia's camel-festival town.
Kebili stretches south across Chott el Jerid into the true Sahara. Its capital town is small, but the real draw is Douz — "the gateway to the Sahara" — where the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental begin.
Douz hosts the International Sahara Festival every December: camel races, traditional Bedouin music, falconry and weddings.
From Douz, 4×4 and camel expeditions head south into the Erg, with bivouac nights under the stars at Ksar Ghilane oasis and beyond.

Every December: camel races, traditional Bedouin music, falconry, weddings. One of the most authentic cultural festivals in North Africa.
A natural hot spring in the middle of the Sahara, surrounded by dunes — the classic Tunisian bivouac destination. 4×4 access only.
The Kebili side of Tunisia's massive salt lake — quieter than the Tozeur side, with views over salt crusts and mirages.
Tozeur-Nefta Airport (TOE) is 100 km west — most visitors arrive via Tozeur. Louages link Kebili and Douz to Gabès and Tunis. A 4×4 with a local driver is essential for any desert excursion.
Douz: Diar Abou Habibi (boutique) and Sahara Douz (4★ resort). Ksar Ghilane: Pansea Ksar Ghilane (luxury tented camp). For the festival in December, book at least 6 months ahead.
Bedouin grills — lamb merguez over palm-wood embers — define the Kebili food experience. Camel-meat tagines are common but not to everyone's taste. Date palms here are productive year-round; the Deglet Nour from Douz rivals Tozeur's.
October–April only. Always travel with a guide for desert expeditions; the dunes look benign but disorient quickly. Carry extra water, fuel and a phone with offline maps. Camp under the stars at least one night — the Milky Way over Ksar Ghilane is genuinely overwhelming.
Yes if you want true Sahara — Douz is the most authentic Tunisian gateway to the Grand Erg Oriental, with established desert operators and Bedouin culture intact.
